Contempt, Respect, and Recognition

Since the early modern period, vast majority of philosophers who have written on contempt understood it as a denial respect. But there has been considerable disagreement about precisely what kind respect we deny people when contemn them. Contemporary defend morally appropriate attitude tend to understand Stephen Darwall calls appraisal respect, while writers, all believe that contemning others constitutes serious moral wrong, seem more recognition In this paper, I argue neither these understandings hits mark and do better conceptualize in sense articulated by Axel Honneth other critical theorists influenced his work.
